Ultrasound Liposuction – Benefits, Risks And Costs
Ultrasonic assisted liposuction, or UAL, makes use of high-pitched sound waves to literally “melt” fat. A pre-injected tumescent solution then emulsifies this liquid fat. This makes it invariably easier for surgeons to vacuum it out. Because of this, the risks for bruising and other injury are reduced (but not completely eliminated).
The Benefits of Ultrasonic Liposuction
Ultrasonic waves can break down and literally liquefy fat. This makes it more suited for removing very dense fat or very large amounts of fatty deposits from any part of the body. While it’s capable of removing fat on a larger scale, it’s also better suited to remove fat from smaller areas of the body such as the chin, neck and face because of its increased precision.
Oftentimes, ultrasonic liposuction is performed complimentary to traditional liposuction because it can provide further contouring and shaping. In addition to that, UAL also helps tighten the skin around the target area, making it a better substitute for tummy tucks or face lifts.
Risks and Complications
Where there’s sound energy, there’s bound to be heat produced. During the procedure, a great deal of heat is produced thereby increasing the risk for burns, scars and blisters. A trained and highly skillful surgeon should know how to best prevent such injury.
Another complication to consider is seroma, which occurs when the body produces excess fluid to fill in the void which results from removing large amounts of fat. This excess fluid can be continuously removed through the use of syringes, until the cavity completely closes.
Anaphylactic reaction to the tumescent solution is another complication worth noting. Before ultrasonic waves are administered, the target area is injected with a tumescent mixture which is composed of an anesthetic, saline solution and epinephrine. Before undergoing UAL, consult your doctor to determine if you are allergic to epinephrine or to anesthesia.
Costs
Ultrasound assisted liposuction can be expected to cost more than traditional liposuction since the surgeon needs to be specifically trained for it. UAL requires a great deal of precision on the part of the surgeon; hence, you can expect the fee to be more costly.
Ultrasonic liposuction cost is affected by certain factors. Among these are clinic location, surgeon expertise, patient gender (in some cases), complexity of the procedure and, most especially, the amount of fat to be removed.
